In this talk we are concerned with splitting methods applied to parabolic equations. We introduce an analytic framework which allows us to analyze various splitting methods, including the Lie and Peaceman-Rachford schemes in the context of dimension splittings. In particular, we derive optimal convergence orders for parabolic linear problems and prove convergence for the quasilinear case. We also illustrate the theoretical results with numerical experiments. This is joint work with A. Ostermann.
